“M3U” is one of those terms that follows every IPTV user around. Here’s what it means, why it matters, and when you need something else instead.
What Is M3U?
M3U (MP3 URL — yes, it started with audio) is a plain-text playlist format. An M3U file or URL is simply a list of stream addresses with optional metadata like channel names, logos and groups. IPTV services adopted it years ago as the universal way to hand a customer their channel list.
What an M3U URL Looks Like
http://line.example.tv:8080/get.php?username=demo&password=secret&type=m3u_plusEverything is in that one link: the server (line.example.tv:8080), the account (username=demo&password=secret), and a request for the playlist (type=m3u_plus). Paste it into any compatible player app and the channel list loads.
M3U_URL vs Xtream Codes Login

Common M3U Questions
Is one M3U link per customer? Yes — the link contains their personal credentials, so each customer gets their own. Never share one customer’s link with another.
Can a customer use the link on multiple devices? That depends on the connection limit of their subscription, not the link itself. Multi-connection plans (like those on Mega OTT) allow 2–3 simultaneous devices.
Why does the playlist look empty in some apps? Usually the type=m3u_plus parameter is missing, or the app needs the Xtream login format for full metadata. Converting to Xtream login fixes most of these cases.
Is it safe to paste the URL anywhere? Treat it like a password — anyone with the link can use the subscription and consume its connections.
